Rachmaninov’s one act opera The Miserly Knight, a setting of one of Pushkin’s Little Tragedies, was composed around the time of the celebrated Second Symphony (the two works even share a musical motif). Brooding and dark in character, the second scene is an extraordinary soliloquy for baritone and orchestra in which the miser of the title gloats over his fortune.

Walton’s powerful First Symphony was written whilst the composer was in the throes of a tempestuous relationship. An overwhelming emotional power underpins the entire work and the symphony secured Walton’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading composers.
